I know why the caged bird sings –

Inspired by the poem ‘Sympathy’ by Paul Lawrence Dunbar, which also inspired the title for the classic memoire by Maya Angelou. I wanted to illustrate the idea of feeling trapped and the oppression that coloured people have had to deal with for all this time and still do. But also, with the silhouettes in the background show how far we’ve come as well as how far we still have to go.
