London Lullaby –
One of my earlier pieces, before I started experimenting with oil paint and really challenging myself with detail. I was really into artists like Emory Douglas and Cleon Peterson who use a more simplistic/block Technique to painting. This is one of the pieces I did in correlation to my ep ‘Synesthesia’ and was named after the single. London Lullaby was written to imitate the feel and intimacy of a lullaby but Instead of it being a children’s tale of a fantasy land far a way its about trying to find comfort within a big city and me trying to lull you to sleep with the familiar sounds of what I call home. I wanted to recreate the mood of the song through the colours and simplicity of it. With the silhouettes being at the for front of the painting but seeming like they’re both in their own worlds I wanted to recreate a sense of isolation as well as a sense of calm. You can also see figures in the bold blocks in the distance meant to represent the rigid skyline of the city and referencing back to the theme which I often use in my paintings that ‘every person has a life as complex as our own’ though its hard to place ourselves in the lives or circumstances of passers by. The boat is a reference to one of the lyrics where I sing ‘won’t you sail with me to the moon’.
