A Midnights Soliloquy –
Initially the colours and set were inspired by the stand up ‘Delirious’ by Eddie Murphy but it got me thinking about how the same stand up set would be perceived in today’s society. We have become so sensitised over everything, some may say over sensitive to the point of not being able to freely express any true, personal opinions. How does this then affect art? Especially when you look at comedy, which initially was seen as a way to say the things many people think but might not say, in a way that can be seen as tasteful or humorous. Can this art form still exist in today’s climate? When thinking through all of this I came up with the title, ‘A Midnight’s Soliloquy’. Midnight being around the time, that if alone, is often seen as a time of reflection a time where someone might engage in a soliloquy either alone or regardless of who might hear. The stage I created for my antagonist was created as a safe place for the character to express their thoughts and the two less detailed, silhouettes were supposed to represent the subconscious. One who seems to be at peace with the release and freedom of expression and the other silhouette in the distance looks like it’s racing to try and stop it. Representing the ‘Cancel culture’ reactions and views of today’s society.
