Miss Black and Beautiful
With this piece I wanted to challenge and subvert traditional stereotypes of beauty and race. By juxtaposing the stereotype of a beauty queen, typically depicted as white, with the image of a black woman. With this painting I hope to convey a message about the diversity of beauty and the importance of representation. It challenges the notion that beauty is confined to a single race or ethnicity, highlighting the beauty, and diversity of black women. Through this juxtaposition, I aim to celebrate black beauty and challenge viewers to question their preconceived notions of what constitutes beauty. Additionally, I hope this painting served as a commentary on societal standards of beauty and the systemic racism that often underlies them. By placing a black woman in the role of a beauty queen, I am critiquing the lack of representation and opportunities afforded to black women in mainstream media and beauty pageants. In hopes to spark dialogue about race, beauty, and representation, while challenging viewers to confront their own biases and perceptions.
